DataQuest FAQ
Why do I have a #INF in my data?
This is a result of division by zero.
Why do I have a #FPERR in my data?
This is a result of dividing zero by zero.
I am trying to create a DQLink
data source and I
can't see my view in the Table/View dropdown
This is due to one of two reasons:
a) the table or view has been made inaccessible by a database administrator
b) There is a syntax error in your view.
Please contact your database administrator if you are experiencing this issue.
My data does not sort properly.
The system is case sensitive. Capital letters are sorted before lower case letters.
My connection to the data source has failed. How do I fix it?
There are many reasons why a data source can fail. The simple reason, and the first thing to
try to resolve the issue, is to confirm that the view works from the source. Other common
issues is a change of password to the data source or a change of structure.
Please review with the database administrator to rule out the above issues.
What happens if we export more the 65,535 rows to Excel
(the limit)
DataQuest will create a MS Excel file with the maximum allowable limit for the application.
Why does my data show dates 12/31/1600 or year 32767.
these appear when the date is missing. Please correct the data and refresh cube.
How can I link to a standard MS EXCEL file
Joining to additional data sources requires DataQuest Pro. DataQuest Pro allows multiple links
to any ODBC compliant data source.
How often can data be refreshed within DataQuest?
DataQuest has a REFRESH button that will refresh all data in the cube on demand.
Between refreshes, data can be analyzed as of the last refresh.
DataQuest also has an Auto-Refresh function which allows the cube creator to set the cube to refresh
each time it is opened.
Can a user review data within DataQuest off line?
Anyone with DataQuest can manipulate the layout, re-sort, and re-sum without being attached to the data.
This allows users to review data at their satellite offices or at remote locations.
Can a user edit data within DataQuest?
DataQuest is designed as a read only system. Users can manipulate
their view of the data, filter and sort.
Is IT Support required to attach to data?
Although IT support is always helpful, DataQuest and its companion product DQLink is designed
to allow the power user access to linkable data. DQLink is a powerful add on allowing the
user the create links to all types of data. DQLink uses the MS Jet engine to easily attach
to data and create complex joins.
What type of data can DataQuest attach to?
DataQuest can link to any type of ODBC compliant data. Also DataQuest comes with the companion
product DQLink. DataQuest can attach to any data that is associated with DQLink.
Why is there a field 0 on my chart legend?
there is no field 0 in my cube.
Null valules in Outside Facts are represented as Field0 in the chart legend.
I have selected several Outside Facts;
why don't I see them on the display grid?
Cube data will not display until you have both an Inside and Outside Fact.
Why can't I add an inside fact to the cube?
You need to add an outside fact initially to start the process. Cube data will not display
until you have both an Inside and Outside Fact.
How do I password protect my DataQuest cubes?
DataQuest allows the user to add a password to the cube. Passwords can be added or removed
by using the Right Mouse Click in the Design Center.
Why can't I get a total on my Outside Facts?
DataQuest does not sum Outside Facts. If you need a total on an outside fact, you can export
the data to Excel for further manipulation.
Why does my chart
option disappear when I am designing?
The chart option is not available when the Design Center is open. To view your data in a
chart, close the Design Center.
Is there a limit to the number of Outside
Facts or Inside Facts for a cube?
There is no technical limit, however if you exceed the visible area with your outside facts,
you will not be able to see your inside facts. Additionally, the greater quantity of facts
that are displayed, the slower the data will be processed.
What does the "I/O" stand for in the designer
The green IO next to each field defines if it is available as an INSIDE or OUTSIDE fact
What is an UNAVAILABLE (MISSING) fact
These are elements that existed in the data source when the cube was last designed, but
which are no longer available in the data source. These elements can not be recaptured
unless the data source is modified. They are listed in the Missing data section merely
to advise the user that they are no longer available and once the cube is redesigned
and saved, they will disappear.
What is an INSIDE fact?
Inside facts are numeric fields that can be summed based on your row and column groupings.
Inside facts only allow numeric fields.
What is an OUTSIDE fact?
Outside facts are fields that can be displayed in a vertical column or horizontal row
and used to group your data.
What does an italicized heading mean?
Fields with an italicized heading signify that there is a filter attached to the field.
Fields that are filtered in the HOLD will not be identified with italics. Use the "REMOVE
FILTERS" button to check for applied filters.
How do I remove all filters?
If your data is filtered (limited by a specific criteria) the "REMOVE FILTERS" button
will become enabled in the menu bar across the top of the application. If you press
this a screen will appear allowing the user to review all fields filtered and the ability
to toggle the filter of any field.
To remove any filter, simply select the check box to the desired field and click OK
What is the difference between TREE view and
NORMAL view?
Tree View will display each of your vertical Outside facts indented from the previous one.
Normal view will display your Outside Facts side by side. If you only have one Outside fact,
you will see no difference in the display.
How can I change the order of my inside
facts?
If you have more than one inside fact selected, you will see a "Columns" dropdown on the
left side. You may open this dropdown and click and drag your fields into the desired
order.
What is a DataQuest Template?
DataQuest is designed to allow the users to make multiple cube files on a single DataQuest
Template file. This allows for the storage of multiple views and designs on the single
source of data. Think of the DataQuest Template as a Microsoft Word .dot file. It will
load a preformatted cube that you can modify to your liking and save.
What does an italicized heading mean?
Fields with an italicized heading signify that there is a filter attached to the field.
Fields that are filtered in the HOLD will not be identified with italics. Use the "REMOVE
FILTERS" button to check for applied filters.
Can I use an IF statement with a function?
Yes. Please refer to the Formula Operators section in the DataQuest Manual for the proper
syntax.
Why won't the Design Center open for certain
cubes?
Design Center will not open if your data source contains more than 250,000 rows. Most of the
time 250,000 records are enough when designing a cube. In the event that you are designing a
cube using a template with more than 250,000 records, you should create a design template
using a subset of the data and once the cube is designed to your liking, change the
cube template to use the one containing the complete set of data.
How can I quickly copy data into my clipboard?
Using the mouse, you can select a block of data and using the standard Copy command
(Ctrl + C) , the data will be placed into the clipboard ready to be pasted into any
application (Excel, Word)
I am trying to sort by my third outside Fact
and the system is not responding.
The system sorts data by left to right columns. You may not see a change in your layout
because you are sorting on your first column, and then within that sort the second column
and then the third column. If you want to sort primarily by your third column, move it to
the first position and then sort.
Why is there a 9 on my Outside Fact Label?
This character appears when you are sorting by an Inside fact. The inside fact has primacy
in the sort, so if you also choose to sort by an outside fact, it will be within the
order of the Inside fact.
if I change the cube an asterisk appears
on the tab after the cube name. What does this mean?
Once you have modified the design or layout of a cube, the system will add an asterisk
in the tab to indicate that there are unsaved changes. Once you save the design, the
asterisk will disappear.
How does Date Split
do?
Date Split is a quick and simple way for the user to divide a date into its
MONTH / QUARTER / YEAR parts. By selecting Date Split on an outside fact, Dataquest
will create selectable fields for each of the part requested
Is it possible to export data to Excel?
DataQuest cubes can easily be exported to MS Excel for distribution. Once the data is
in MS Excel the user can edit any information in the sheet. HOWEVER modified data will
not flow back to the source as all data in DataQuest is read only. Data can be exported
by using the Report option on the cube toolbar.
DataQuest cubes can also be exported to HTML or PDF files.
Can a DataQuest Cube be password protected?
DataQuest allows the user, in the Design Center, to attach a password to a specific cube.
The cube file will not open unless the appropriate password is entered.
DataQuest is designed for what type of user?
DataQuest is designed for Excel Users. If you are comfortable opening and reviewing
spreadsheets, DataQuest will have a familiar look and feel.
Why do some cubes ask me if I want to
refresh the data and other cubes don't?
If a cube is set to Auto Refresh then each time that you open it you will be asked
if you want to refresh the data.
Can I send someone a cube and not allow
them to drill into the details?
Any user with access to the DataQuest Reader will be able to drill
into the details. In order to limit the view of users, remove
the columns you want hidden into the unassigned section of the
designer. Readers will not be able to look at fields from this
section.
How can I print a different heading on
the report - perhaps add "DRAFT" or "INTERNAL" to the heading
The Title field on the top right portion is the title of the Cube and can
be modified and saved by selecting the Apply button. The Title is displayed on the top
of all extracts and is stored inside the cube once saved. This
will not change the name of the cube itself; it will only change the
cube title when the cube is opened.
How do I upgrade my version of DataQuest?
Please contact SGP International at
sales@sgpinternational.com
What happens if I forget the cube password?
We provide a service that will retrieve a password
What is the difference between the SERVER and
the ODBC?
A Server connection attaches directly into a database on a server, whereas an ODBC
Connection needs a machine DSN to access the database
